If you've had a WhatsApp Business Platform display name rejected and weren't told exactly why, you're not alone — Meta's review is largely a consistency check, and most rejections come from the same handful of mismatches. This isn't a substitute for Meta's own current documentation, which changes and should always be your final source.

Name correlation

Meta compares your requested display name against the legal business name on file in your Meta Business Portfolio. If they're clearly the same business, approval is straightforward. If they look unrelated, expect a rejection or a request for more information.

A working, consistent website

A display name generally can't be approved without a live website, and that website needs to show the business the display name represents — the same name, or a clear statement of the relationship if the display name is a brand and the legal entity is different. A plain sentence such as “Brand, a brand of Legal Entity” does real work in a review.

Consistent contact details everywhere

If your website, Meta Business Portfolio, and WhatsApp profile show different phone numbers or email addresses, that's friction in the review and for your actual customers too. Before applying, make sure every public-facing surface agrees.

What your display name shouldn't be

Meta's guidelines rule out names that are purely generic, purely geographic, or include words like “Official” or “Verified” — those imply a status you haven't been granted — or Meta product names themselves.

Verification and the display name are related but separate

Business verification and display-name approval are different checks, though they interact. Policies shift; check Meta's current documentation before you plan a launch date around it.

The practical checklist, before you apply

  1. Legal name in your Meta Business Portfolio matches or is visibly related to the requested display name.
  2. Your website is live, working, and shows that same name or relationship.
  3. Phone, email, and address match across the website, Meta Business Portfolio, and public listings.
  4. The display name avoids generic terms, geography-only names, “Official,” “Verified,” and Meta product names.
  5. You have read Meta's current display-name and verification documentation; this article is orientation, not a replacement.
None of this guarantees approval. It removes the self-inflicted reasons a review stalls.
